Commonwealth Game 2010 - Christina, Ian sparkle

Christina Loh (left) and Ian James Barr performed creditably despite not ending up on the podium.

CHRISTINA Loh set a national record in the 50m breaststroke while Ian James Barr made the semi-finals of the men's 50m backstroke as the rest of the Malaysian challenge sank at the Dr SPM Swimming Complex yesterday.
Christina, despite finishing sixth in her heats, clocked 33.39s to better her own national record by 0.03s.

Ian, swimming against quality opposition, did well to make the semi-finals which proved to be just too much for him later in the day but he did give the Malaysian camp something to smile about after Daniel Bego failed to impress in the 200m butterfly.

"Christina swam really well and setting a new national record was the target set for," said team manager Tang Kwai Mee.

Ian clocked 27.45s in the heats to qualify as the 15th fastest for the evening semi-finals from which he, as expected, failed to advance, clocking 27.21 to finish sixth in his heat.

The others, however, failed to inspire as Daniel -- Malaysia's best hope for an appearance in the final, failed to qualify for the 200m butterfly final.

Daniel clocked 2:01.08s to finish fifth in his heat and 14th overall.

"Daniel said the water felt a little cold but generally, he didn't perform well," said Kwai Mee.

"We have targeted at least an appearance in a final from him in New Delhi and, hopefully, now that the first event is over, he will discover his form."

Kevin Yeap was also out of his depth in the 400m freestyle, clocking 4:03.25s in his heat for a sixth place finish.

The other women fared no better as Chan Kan Yan clocked 2:05.78s to finish seventh in her 200m freestyle heat while Erika Kong finished seventh in her 50m breaststroke heat, clocking 33.56.

Malaysia's only swimming medals in the Commonwealth Games were won by Lim Keng Liat in the 2002 Manchester Games where he got a silver and a bronze.
