Stunning win for Razif-Khoo, revenge for Kay Bin

PETALING JAYA: The national back-up men's doubles pair of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Khoo Chung Chiat chalked up their biggest career win on the opening day of the Macau Open yesterday.

They came back from a game down to stun Japan Open runners-up Alven Yulianto-Luluk Hadiyanto of Indonesia, winning the first round match 10-21, 21-16, 21-16.

Their win is the first big success by a pair in the Project 2010-12 squad against highly ranked combinations on the international stage.

In the men's singles, SEA Games-bound Yeoh Kay Bin and Tan Chun Seang got off to rousing starts.

It was sweet revenge for Kay Bin against Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia, who beat the Malaysian in the semi-finals of the New Zealand Open en route to winning the title.

Kay Bin: Beat Indonesia’s Andre Kurniawan Tedjono in the first round of the Macau Open.
Kay Bin won the match 21-18, 21-14.

Top back-up shuttler Chun Seang scored an easy 21-9, 21-8 win over homester Tat Lei but the Kedahan will have an uphill task against China's Chen Hong in the next round.

Eight other Malaysian men's singles players also made it to the second round.

They are Wong Choong Hann, K. Yogendran, Mohd Roslin Hashim, Beryno Wong, Liew Daren, Lim Kenn, Teo Kok Seang and Chong Li Qun.

But Asian junior runner-up Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Chong Wei Feng crashed out.

The withdrawal of top seeded and world number one Lin Dan of China has brighten the chances of Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia to reach the final on Sunday.
